Blair pleased to make goal scoring return to Bootham Crescent
Match winner Matty Blair believes Fleetwood Town could have taken a greater advantage going into the crucial Play-Off semi final second leg, but insisted he and the rest of the squad will be ready to ‘get the job done.’
The 23-year-old former York City winger scored the decisive goal early in the second half after tapping in Antoni Sarcevic’s strike across the area to give Fleetwood a narrow 1-0 advantage going into the all important second leg at Highbury Stadium this Friday.
Speaking to the club’s official website in the aftermath of the game, Blair said: “It’s a very good result. We would have taken a win at the start of the game, but it could have been more.
“It probably should have been more, I had a good chance and Humey had a one-on-one, but you could argue the flipside that they had a few chances as well. We’re all very happy at the moment.
“It’s nice to score in general whether it is a winner or whether just contributing in the game.
“I actually thought I wasn’t very good tonight, first half I had a few bad passes and bad crosses and in the second half I got better. I got my goal, but if I play bad and score every week you take that and we will go again.
“You would take a 1-0 at the start all day long. I thought we looked solid at the back and we created some chances going forward so it was very positive performance.
“They’re solid at the back as well and got threats going forward, a bit like ourselves, but we have got the advantage going into the second leg. We just have to make sure we are ready for Friday now.”
The original fixture for the first leg was set to take place on Saturday evening, but due to poor weather, the game was postponed by referee Carl Boyeson.
Blair admitted that the Cod Army remained positive about getting a first leg advantage despite the game delay and in one final message said the squad are confident of seeing the job through when the two sides go head-to-head for a place at Wembley on Friday.
“It was a little bit heavy in some places. If you had said to me on Saturday that we had to come back Monday and win 1-0 then that’s not a problem,” He added.
“We are confident regardless, we are confident for every game we go into. We have got a good enough team and squad to not fear anybody. We will get ourselves ready and we will go out again and get the job done.”
