Goals from Hunter and Murdoch won the game for Town

Fleetwood Town’s development squad defeated Aston Villa 2-1 at Bodymoor Heath Training Ground this afternoon.

A penalty in the first half from Ash Hunter was cancelled out by a home goal, however midfielder Stewart Murdoch struck the winner in the second half.

After last week’s Lancashire FA Trophy upset away at Rochdale, today’s victory in the West Midlands will have done Nicholson’s side wonders.

He said: “It was a really good performance from the boys today. We were playing against a really strong Aston Villa side who had the likes of Ron Vlaar and Joe Cole in their team.

“We obviously had a little bit of experience ourselves with the likes of Stephen Crainey, Stewart and Liam McAlinden playing.

“Having those boys in helped us, but it was a fantastic performance overall from all of the lads and I’m very happy.

“Ash scored a penalty for us in the first half, and then they equalised just before half time and it was a poor goal to concede from our point of view.

“We played really well in the second half and Stewart has scored the winner, so I’m really pleased for all of the lads.

“The likes of your Aston Villa’s are the sort of sides that these lads want to test themselves against, and that’s why we take these games.

“The conditions today were really difficult as it was very windy, but we kept the ball down and played well which was great to see.

“There’s obviously a couple of things in the performance that we’ll look back on, however overall we played well and scored some great goals.”
