Town ready for Southend trip

Uwe Rosler says his side are both ‘physically and mentally refreshed’ ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet League One match against Southend United.

Town suffered a narrow defeat of the season against Bolton Wanderers last Saturday after a hectic start to the campaign but travel to Roots Hall refreshed after having a full week without a fixture.

“The boys had Wednesday off and came in on Thursday both physically and mentally refreshed and focused,” said Rosler.

“We needed to give the players a rest period as we had five games in two weeks and we played with the same 13 players.

“There was a combination of getting the work done, but also to give them time to refresh because again next week we have another three games.”

Rosler could hand a debut to new signing Martyn Woolford against The Shrimpers this weekend, after joining from Sheffield United last week. The midfielder, who has made more than 300 career appearances, featured in a behind closed doors match with Oldham on Wednesday.

“We had the chance yesterday (Wednesday) to see the players who hadn’t had many minutes lately. Martyn got some valuable 65 minutes under his belt and I saw a lot in the 65 minutes that he can play the position that we’ve got him.

“He’s a very experienced player who has very good game management and like I said I am very happy to have a versatile player who can cover all three positions on the left hand side.

“We needed someone with experience and knowhow with the characteristic with the player that we’re looking for. Martyn showed me yesterday then he is on a very good way to regaining 100% match fitness.

Southend come into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers where summer signing Simon Cox scored a late penalty to rescue a point for Phil Brown’s side.

“Southend is a club who try to be a little bit under the radar. Last year they came close to the playoffs and I think when they have the finances to sign a player like (Simon) Cox, it tells me that they are aiming for the top six.”
