Head coach previews trip to Gills
Uwe Rosler says it is ‘special’ what Fleetwood have achieved this season ahead of their fixture against Gillingham on Saturday.
His side produced a dogged 1-0 win on Easter Monday over fellow promotion hopefuls Millwall, who occupy 6th place.
The win secured a play-off place for Town meaning they will definitely play a part in the end of season fight for promotion, a big relief for Rosler.
“Nobody could even dream of this, it’s unimaginable but we are where we are now and we’re enjoying it,” said the German.
“It’s a relief to finally make it mathematically happen that we are at least in the play-offs.
“We have been in them for three or four months now and you don’t want to drop out at the last minute.
“I felt we approached the Millwall game in the beginning like we had something to lose but I am sure the players now, seeing how they are on the training ground, and talking to them that they have that belief and confidence of nothing more to lose and everything more to win.
“Winning on Monday gave everyone a lift, knowing now that we are at least finishing fifth. I think a lot of energy can be taken from that.”
The Fleetwood boss is now tasked with preparing his side to face a Gillingham team who are in the midst of a relegation battle, and is not expecting an easy game at the Priestfield.
“I think it will be difficult and we all know that, but manageable for us as you saw when we play like we played against Peterborough for example,” added Rosler.
“We go to Gillingham to try and win the game and we’re putting out a squad and a team we believe can win the game. We want to try and put pressure on Bolton.”
Getting in the top six does not mean the job is done though as far as the Town manager is concerned, and he wants his players to perform well in the final two league matches before hitting their stride when the play-offs come around.
“We are not where we want to be yet, we want to take that next step,” he said.
“The play-offs is good but the job isn’t done by getting in there, we want to take the next step and get promoted. We have to plan and hopefully we can hit peak form in the next two games and then when it is needed in the play-offs.
“Nobody expected us to be in this position and nobody prepared us for that. The whole club has accelerated this season in a way nobody could predict and now we need to make the most out of it.”
