Peterborough United will play in League One for the fourth consecutive campaign after concluding the 2015/16 season in 13th position in the third tier.
Chairman Darragh MacAnthony took the decision to appoint Posh favourite Grant McCann as the new manager at London Road back in May, in the hope that he can mastermind a promotion challenge when the new season kicks off in
early August.
McCann will take his first full-time footsteps into professional management, having served Peterborough as a player for five-years, between 2010-2015 and making over 100 appearances during a prolonged stay at the Cambridgeshire outfit.
The now 36-year-old Belfast native began his career in the youth system of Lisburn Distillery in his home country of Northern Ireland, prior to moving to England, where he signed on as an apprentice with West Ham United.
Subsequently, McCann penned professional terms at the Hammers in 1998, but found first team opportunities hard to come by in his five-years in East London, spending time away from Upton Park on loan with Livingston, Notts
County and Cheltenham Town.
His loan move at Cheltenham was made permanent in January 2003, and over a four-year stay, he would make 158 appearances at Whaddon Road, earning promotion to League One with the Gloucestershire side in 2006.
A brief permeant spell at Barnsley followed before McCann agreed a deal to sign for Scunthorpe United in January 2008.
At the Iron, he made 102 appearances in that time and he also won promotion to the Championship in May 2009, via the Play-Offs.
A year later, in May 2010, McCann signed for Peterborough United, a club who he would spend the next five-years with, turning out on 128 occasions, and again winning a Play-Off final to get to the Championship in May 2011.
McCann hung up his boots at Linfield in February 2015, ending a career which also included 40 appearances for Northern Ireland.
He returned to Peterborough in a coaching capacity before being announced as Graham Westley’s successor on 16th May this year.
