Match winner reacts after Lions win

Ben Davies has hailed his first senior goal as a ‘great moment’ after scoring the winner in Monday’s 1-0 win over Millwall.

Davies’ header on the stroke of half time guaranteed a place in the Sky Bet League One play-offs for Uwe Rosler’s side with two games to play.

The defender – on loan from Preston – was pleased his first strike was one of such importance to the club.

“I’ve played over 100 games and never scored,” he said.

“It’s been a long time coming for me, I was delighted to see the ball in the back of the net and even happier that it’s such an important goal that’s given us all three points.

“I was seeing the ball well and judging my jumps quite nicely, I’d had a couple of efforts before the goal and just couldn’t quite get the timing to send it in the net but third time lucky it went in, it was a great moment.

“We’ve reached our points target now and that’s been enough to secure us the play-offs, so anything else is a bonus.”

Following his goal, Davies was part of an outstanding defensive unit that shut the visitors out and he has praised the efforts of those around him.

“Alex Cairns had a great game and the amount of headers Pondy [Nathan Pond] won, was amazing,” added Davies.

“We definitely rode our luck at times, it was amazing for us to pick ourselves up after the first half an hour.

“I thought we grew into the game in that little period before half time and we got our footballers on the ball, passed it around well and getting the goal right on half time was a huge moment.”

Town have two games remaining this season and after back-to-back wins, Davies has urged his teammates to keep the push going.

“I’ve really enjoyed being at Fleetwood, and now we’ve managed to secure the play offs that will be even more experience,” he added.

“It’s an unbelievable achievement for the club and it gives us a chance to do something really special, we need to try and keep the momentum going, keep picking up points and see where it takes us.”
