Adam: We’ve got to just keep sticking together

Head coach Charlie Adam spoke to the local media after his side came back from behind to earn a point against Charlton and extend the side's unbeaten run to six today at Highbury.

Ryan Graydon’s 85th-minute goal cancelled out Alfie May’s first-half penalty to make it six games unbeaten in League One for the Cods. Adam’s men then came close to winning the game late on but were left to settle for a point.

Here’s what the Fleetwood Town head coach had to say:

On this afternoon’s result…

“We’re happy with a point but disappointed not to win the match, I think we deserved in the end really to win it. I think if you look at what we did today again, created three or four big chances. I thought in spells we did well.

“The lads have been magnificent, I keep saying it, they’ve been brilliant since I’ve come into the door. We’ve got to just keep sticking together and getting those three points, the feeling is like it’s coming around the corner.

“I believe that we had the best chances in the game and it’s disappointing, but we’ve closed the gap and that’s all you can do. We’ll go away and we’ll dust ourselves and we’ll look at it in real frustration in terms of not winning the football match.”

A big second-half reaction after going behind…

“We have to look at where we’re in the game, it’s 45 minutes, and we probably have to deal with (the penalty incident) better in the first instance. The reaction that the lads showed was brilliant and they deserved that draw. The substitutes came in and made an impact on the match and that’s important as well.

“(Ryan Graydon) has come in and out of the team whilst I’ve been here, but ultimately you want your substitutes to make an impact and I think he did that. Rooney has come in and been magnificent for the last two and a half games.

“Danny Mayor gave us a little bit of control in the game. I thought Tommy Lonergan looked excellent when he came on as well. It could’ve been a fairytale ending for him but ultimately the goalkeeper gets in the way of the header at the end.

“There are some real positives today and I’m delighted with what they’re giving. We’ll have a break now dust ourselves down and be ready to go for the last seven games. I want (the forwards) to go and press the game, I want them to be active, I want them to be aggressive at the top end of the pitch. We need to use that front six as well as we can.”

On the chance to freshen up over the break...

"We have just got to stick together to try and get these three points because we feel the three are just behind the corner, I'm happy we have this break as this is a good chance now to take a break mentally and physically.

"We are asking a lot of them daily so it gives everyone in the building a chance to recharge a bit and to have some family time and things like that, we will be ready to be back in the building on Tuesday and ready to give our all for Cheltenham.

"Mentally and physically we demand a lot from these players and the staff as well have given us everything whilst we are in the building as the players are taking everything on board what we are asking from them.

"It's good as us for staff to get a break too because some of the lads go away on international break where we hope they have a good time, play well and come back fit and ready for the challenge."

On the fight in the camp...

"I don't think the draws show that we could have nicked the games, we have had big chances in every game, and we probably could have edged any game because we have been in those games where also a few decisions have gone against us but I am so proud of every single one of these lads, we have to galvanise every person at this football club.

"These are the moments you have to relish, these are the games you have to want to play in as a footballer, you want to be in the big games and for us we will do all we can to start winning football games, I'm looking forward to the challenge.

"We don't fear anyone in this league, there is good teams in this league but we can cause anyone issues home or away, we will be prepared and ready as every game is a big game and I demand that from the players and the staff - we will have a right go at it."
