Mayor: We just need to get through this tough patch

Midfielder Danny Mayor sat down with the press before travelling down south for Fleetwood Town’s clash with Charlton Athletic on Thursday afternoon.

Mayor, who signed for the club from Plymouth Argyle, has featured multiple times already this season and is eager to turn the recent run of form around and thinks that the group is exactly what is needed to do just that.

Here’s what Danny had to say in his pre-match press conference:

On how far he feels we are far off at the moment…

“I don’t think we’re a million miles away at all, we were poor in the Cambridge game this season, we’ve been open about that and we were punished by good play in the Bolton game, our actual play wasn’t that bad. In other games, we’ve started well, you look at Derby, you end up thinking ‘how have we come away with a 1-0 loss there’.

“We just need something to fall for us and, hopefully, that comes on Saturday – we just need to get through this tough patch and out the other side. We don’t know what the caretaker manager is going to do for Charlton this Saturday, whether he’s going to bring some of his young lads through or change his formation.

“It’s hard to tell, I think we’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves and talk about the positives, not about the negatives in games. We need to be ruthless in both boxes, we created some good chances last week, but they had one opportunity and scored from it, that’s why we need to concentrate on ourselves against Charlton and try to be more ruthless.”

On having the right kind of players in the dressing room…

“You usually sign players who are going to fit in right away, that’s what the staff are looking for, most lads who come in are just good lads. It’s a big thing, getting good lads in, as I’ve been in dressing rooms where there were cliques and people didn’t get on as much and you do well to get a good season from that.

“We’ve got an honest group, if we have to dig people out, we can do that and, especially with the way we’ve started, you could see people go their own directions, but we haven’t got that, we’ve got a good group. When something is said, we make it clear that it’s nothing against the person, we’re just trying to find a winning formula.

“We’ve got good lads here; everyone gets on and I think that goes a long way. If you’ve got a happy dressing room, and all the lads are pulling in the right direction, you can have a good season. We know we haven’t had a great start; we haven’t had the points we deserve from our play, but we know that we’re close.”
