FTFCU18 defeat at Highbury
9 March 2010

Fleetwood Town U18 1-3 New Mills U18
North West Youth Alliance
Sunday 7th March 2010

By Mark Bowley

The young players at Fleetwood had the fantastic opportunity to play this North West Youth Alliance League fixture at Highbury. On a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon the pitch looked great and the players from both teams welcomed the chance they had been given.

With many of the Fleetwood squad having played on Friday night and the reserves having a fixture on Monday night the town team was selected mainly from the development programme.

The kick off was delayed due to the officials being held up in traffic but when the game did eventually start it was Fleetwood that had the better of the opening minutes. However it didn’t take New Mills long before they started to dominate the play and they took an early lead with some excellent Football. Fleetwood once again continued to play some delightful football themselves without creating too many chances. Just prior to the interval New Mills scored again which was against the run of play some what but was never the less an excellent move.

After the break Fleetwood again totally dominated the play and it only seemed time before they would get one back but New Mills showed how clinical they can be with the third that really finished the game off.

Credit to Fleetwood young guns they didn’t let their heads drop at all and eventually they got the reward after some excellent work by Josh Cawley filling in at right back found Jake White who coolly slotted the ball home.
Despite the result there were some creditable performances in the Fleetwood squad specifically the back four and captain for the day Jake White.

After the game Fleetwood Manager Mick Sumner said “This was always going to be a difficult fixture. New Mills are a very good physical team and have been together for a few seasons now. But we have to look at the development of our lads and many of them have done themselves proud today. The goals really came about from bad decision making but that is something that these lads will work on and it will make them better players.”
