Town U18 maintain top spot
18 January 2010
UNDER 18’S By Mark Bowley
Fleetwood Town 5-0 AFC Blackpool
LFA U18 Floodlight League
Monday 18 January 2010
After Sundays excellent victory in the Lancashire Cup quarter finals it was back to business in the Lancashire Floodlight League for Fleetwood’s youth team on Monday night.
With most of the Under 18’s players unavailable it was a good opportunity for the players from the Youth Development Programme to sample another level of Football against local rivals AFC Blackpool at Collins Park.
From the kick off Fleetwood showed determination, passion and commitment which together with skill accuracy and speed made for an excellent performance.
Ryan Tanzer used his lightening speed and skill to great effect in attack and Kyle Bennett and Connor McGough were solid and creative in midfield. Joe Newsom back in the side after his recent illness captained the side and lead by example with some terrific work on the left and Joe Camozzi, who had played 24hrs early in the Norcross victory, showed just what a great engine he possesses and completed another 90minutes without breaking sweat. A new back four of Moulding, Cawley, Bennett and man of the match Steve Miller, another returning from long term injury looked solid
Conner McGough opened the scoring from a corner when Josh Cawley rose to head the ball goal bound and he managed to deflect it into the net. Tanzer made it two and would have had another from a superb free kick if it hadn’t been for some terrific goal keeping from the AFC Blackpool keeper.
However it was Fleetwood’s own keeper, Nathan Thomson who came off at the break with all the plaudits after a truly magnificent one handed save just before half time that underlined what an excellent prospect he is for town.
Fleetwood made two changes at half time and it was one of the substitutes Josh Walker (pic) who got Fleetwood’s third with a good header, directed into the corner that gave the AFC keeper little chance to react. Walker scored again to make it four before Joe Camozzi struck probably the pick of the bunch with a 25yard screamer into the roof of the net to finish off a very good Fleetwood victory.
After the game Assistant Manager Mark Bowley said “We are delighted with this result. It’s a clear indication of the progression these lads are making at Fleetwood Town Football Club. The style of football the lads played tonight and speciffically the attitude they showed from start to finish was a credit to everyone involved at the club. The strikers will take the accolades, and rightly so but we are equally pleased with the clean sheet.
