Sumner earns England call-up
4 December, 2009
Fleetwood Town under 18 skipper Adam Sumner celebrates his 18th birthday today (Friday) with the news he has been called up to represent English Colleges FA.
Left-back Sumner is eligible through his studies at Myerscough College, where he is studying sports science. All participating colleges must be affiliated to their County FA and players must be full time students of the college they represent and be under 19 years old.
The selection process has involved three trial sessions before news broke about his selection which will see the defender included in the national squad in the New Year. The team has two warm-up internationals arranged before the squad travels to Rome in February for an international tournament.
The youngster, who is currently on loan at AFC Blackpool and has featured regularly for Town reserves, said he is pleased with the call up.
“It’s a great honour to be called up for the college’s national side. My game is improving all the time and I’m gaining some very good experience along the way. I’m very settled at Fleetwood Town and feel I’m at the right place to advance my footballing career.”
First team manager and director of youth at Fleetwood Town Micky Mellon was full of praise for the left-back.
“Adam has done very well for us this season. His football speaks for itself by the fact he has been selected for international honours within the college system. There aren’t too many players who can say they have worn a shirt for their country.”
Adam has long shown his interest in football as these early years photos show. Happy birthday !!
