U18's enjoy away win
24 November, 2009
Glossop 1-4 Fleetwood Town
NW Youth Alliance
Sunday 22 November 2009
With the Under 18's manager Mick Sumner away on family duties it was down to his assistants Mark Bowley and Steve Kershaw to travel with the squad to darkest Derbyshire on a cold wet afternoon. Even the torrential weather couldn’t call this game off as the home team play on artificial pitch.
With the wind at gale force the Fleetwood team decided to defend the strong wind in the first half and an excellent job they made of it. Centre half partnership of Josh Cawley and Connor McGough dealt with everything that was thrown at them and keeper Nathan Thomson’s handling was solid. In attack Joe Newsome playing his first game for over six months for the youth team due to injury and was outstanding, supported well by Josh Walker.
It was Fleetwood who scored first after some excellent build up play with Bobby Gunn hitting a scorcher into the top corner. Fleetwood managed to keep the score the same into the break.
In the second half Fleetwood took control of the game and it wasn’t long before man of the match Joe Newsome (pic) hit towns second with a delightful strike from outside the area that curled into the top corner.
Credit to Glossop who never gave up and got on the score sheet after a defensive lack of concentration.
Josh Cawley and Josh Walker then got Fleetwood’s third and forth to secure an excellent three points for Fleetwood.
Assistant Manager Steve Kershaw said "This was a good performance. The lads all worked hard in terrible conditions. We know these players will give everything for Fleetwood Town and they proved that today. It was great to see Joe Newsome back in a Town shirt. He was excellent."
