FTFCTown U18 progress in cup

Penwortham 0-5 Fleetwood town
Lancashire FA Youth Cup 3rd Round
Sunday 18th October 2009

By Mark Bowley

Another away day for Fleetwood Town Under 18’s this time in the Lancashire Cup 3rd round at Penwortham.

An 11am kick off meant that the players had to be up at the unearthly time of 8.15am a time they hadn’t seen since leaving school. As predicted we had the usual excuses such as “my alarm didn’t go off Gaffer.” But at least all but one player managed to make it to the meeting point on time.

Having played Penwortham in a pre season game the major concern of the management was that the players would be over confident but once the game kicked off they had little to worry about as far as this was concerned. In the first fifteen minutes Town played some delightful football with man of the match Adam Sumner (pic) being fundamental in everything.

Liam Wynn and Chris Vivian were controlling the centre of midfield and Mark France and Mick Booth were looking lively up front.

It was Sumner who got the Fleetwood opener with an excellent drive from just outside the penalty box that left the Penwortham keeper rooted to the spot. The second Fleetwood goal was slightly fortuitists from a corner the ball bounced around in the penalty area and a shot hit the legs of Mick Booth and deflected over the Penwortham keeper. Liam Wynn then scored the first of his two goals just before the interval. He received the ball on the edge of the six yard box and with his back towards the goal he managed to turn the defender and rifle a short low into the corner of the net.

The instructions during the break couldn’t have been any simpler from the Fleetwood Management team “just keep doing the same things.”

In the second half Wynn scored his second, and Fleetwood's fourth, again with an excellent low drive into the bottom corner.

Some of the Town players wrongly thought that the game was now in the bag and they were guilty of relaxing too much. Credit to Penwortham they never gave up the fight. Team manager Mick Sumner was forced to make changes to freshen things up. It was  one of those subsitutes Steve Miller who had been in excellent form in recent games who delivered a superb cross for Adam Sumner to knock down and Joe Camozzi finally finished the game off with Town's fifth.

After the game team Manager Mick Sumner said “We played some very good football at times today. Our passing and closing down was really good. The finishing was different class. Credit to Penwortham they never gave up and made a very good game of it. We need to keep this going now if we want to continue to progress in this cup competition.”
