Fleetwood Town U18 3-0  Pro Vision A U18
North West Youth Alliance Football League Division 1
Sunday 13th September 2009
By Mark Bowley

The first game of the season in the North West Youth Alliance for Town and a chance to see how the young players would cope with yet another challenger.

The aims and objectives are to give the players quality opposition from other areas of the North West so as they can develop as players and  individuals and today’s visitors from Bury were the first hurdle.
Manager Mick Sumner had no doubt how important it was to get a good start to the season and he sent his team out with instruction to put into practise what they had worked so hard on in pre-season.

The first ten minutes was all about Fleetwood keeping the ball and the midfield stamping their authority on the game. Josh Few and Liam Wynn in the centre of the midfield soon started to impress and the hard working Connor McGough (pic) and skilful Greg Trimbell gave Town width and excellent delivery to the strikers.

It was man of the match Timbrell and McGough who linked well to give Fleetwood their opening goal. Timbrell received the ball out wide on the left and ran at the defender. With superb skill and pace he skipped past the full back and delivered an inch perfect cross to the back post where McGough rose and powered his header into the net.

The opposition then had their best period of the game and put the Fleetwood defence under some pressure with some excellent balls into the box themselves but they found the Fleetwood centre halves of Jack Duggan and Andy Batholomew in fine form and full backs Grant Dell and Sean Moulding covered well.

Fleetwood’s second came from a corner kick. Moulding delivered another well placed set piece and Duggan’s fine header found the back of the net.
Fleetwood third was a solo effort from Josh few. He received the ball just outside the opposition area and encouraged by the coaching staff he drove at the heart of the Pro vision defence and coolly slotted his finish past the advancing keeper.

In the second half Fleetwood totally dominated the play but failed to add to the score line despite creating numerous opportunities.

Manager Mick Sumner said after the game “We played some good football at times and our movement off the ball was excellent. This is a new league for Fleetwood Town and we started the campaign well. The long away fixtures will mean that we will need a lot of commitment from all the players and the management team, but I’m sure it will be good for everyone concerned and I know we will be up for the challenge.
