Fleetwood Town U18 7-0 Charnock Richard U18
Lancashire FA Youth Cup 1st Round
Wednesday 2nd September 2009
Collins Park, Blackpool

By Mark Bowley

The much anticipated first game of the season for Fleetwood U18s was in the Lancashire FA Youth Cup 1st Round and played at the club’s training ground, Collins Park. The game was, ironically, against a pre-season opponent who soundly beat Town 5-1.

The side has worked extremely hard since that set back and the staff and players knew the importance of starting the season in winning ways.

A decent crowd braved the wind and rain including first team manager Micky Mellon, club captain Jamie Milligan and Chief Executive Steve Curwood.

Fleetwood dominated the game from the first whistle and their early creativity paid off  through captain Liam Wynn.  The skipper struck with a sweet angled shot from just inside the area.  Both full backs, Shaun Moulding and Joe Camozzi, added to the wing play and moved forward to add to a string of chances for Town.

The second for Fleetwood was created and eventually scored by the rapid Ryan Tanzer who went on to torment the opposition with his pace and sublime skills. Hard working Yannis Verenakis and Wynn added two more before the break.

Fleetwood started the second period aware Charnock would come out determined to make amends.  The tenacious midfield of Wynn, Few, Vivian and Trimbell, along with a stubborn defence manfully marshalled by Jack Duggan and Andy Bathholomew, were determined to keep a clean sheet.

The conditions worsening but Town continued to retain the ball well and create goal scoring opportunities.  Fleetwood’s three second half goals came from their back line with man of the match Joe Camozzi notching two, his second a superb drive from outside the area.  Centre half Jack Duggan scored the other.

After the game Manager Mick Sumner said “This was a good performance by the entire squad. We knew the importance of the first goal and so it proved. Charnock are a strong team with some good players. We played with a good tempo and at times kept the ball well. The players have now set the bench mark. We have some excellent lads waiting for their opportunity to stake a place in this squad.”
