Fleetwood Town Youth  v  Burnley Youth

SCORE             2 v 1

SCORERS        Mark France x 2

In front of the first team manager Micky Mellon the young players from Fleetwood Town Youth Team put on a superb display against their Premier League visitors.

From the first whistle Fleetwood took charge of the game with the midfield making a thorough nuisance of themselves. They were tenacious in the tackles and once the ball their retention was excellent.

Scott Thompson with has pace caused the Burnley defence problems and with a little more composure in front of goal Fleetwood could have been well in front before the break.

In the second half Fleetwood continued to work extremely hard, tirelessly closing the opposition down and snuffing out any chances Burnley made.
Against the run of play it was Burnley who scored first when Fleetwood for the first time in the game switched off and their passing game had not been as effective as it had been early on in the match.

The test now was how would the young Players of Fleetwood react.
The answer was there for all to see. They continued to do what they have been working on all pre season and it was Mark France coming off the bench who showed an excellent turn of pace to beat the Burnley keeper to the ball and slot it home for a well deserved equaliser.

In the final minutes Fleetwood pushed on for the winner. Josh Few’s missile like throwing bounced around in the Burnley box and it was the alert France who eventually struck his second and Fleetwood’s winner.

Manager Mick Sumner said “This was a brilliant result for the lads. They have now set the bench mark and know what is expected of them for the rest of the season. This is the standard of teams we would love to play all the time. It was terrific for our lads and I would like to thank Burnley for allowing us the opportunity to play them.

To beat a premier league outfit such as Burnley is a massive scalp for our lads.

Micky Mellon added "This is a massive result for our lads.  It clearly shows the very high standards we've adopted at the Fleetwood Town player development programme. I'm delighted with the result and the performance."
