FTFCFLEETWOOD, Lancs, 23 January, 2009

Thursday 22nd January 2008
Myerscough 1-3 Fleetwood Town Youth

After a disappointing 2-0 defeat away at Colne, Fleetwood Town U18s where again on their travels to Myerscough College.  This was going to be a true test for the team as the Myerscough team is predominantly made up of Stockport County Youth players.

Fleetwood's youth team were very quick to start and well organised from the off. Within 10-minutes Joey Newsome took hold of a long ball and out muscled the centre half to fire home an in style.  This gave Town the confidence to take the game to Myerscough and disregard their reputation.  Mid-way through the first period Grant Dell conceded a free kick just outside the area and Myerscough took full advantage to draw level.

The game remained deadlocked as the second half got underway and Fleetwood went on to outplay Myerscough for long spells.  The away team attacked from both sides with Mike Booth putting the home defence under pressure.  A well rehearsed training ground corner resulted in Fleetwood doubling their score through Mark France.  Myerscough put Town under a some late pressure but the defence and midfield dealt with everything sent their way.  Newsome grabbed his second following a period of exceptional play and put the game out of Myserscough’s reach.

An overall solid team performance was capped by the back four and helped Joe Bowley (pictured) being named Man of the Match.  The midfield played exceptionally well with Sam Ratcliffe back in the old partnership with Adam Sumner who returned after a 12-week absence following a broken foot.

Fleetwood Town now look forward to Monday 26th January when they entertain Wren Rovers at Collins Park. Kick-off is 7.30pm and all are welcome.

Squad: N Thompson, J Bowley (L Wynne), A Bartholomew, G Dell, J Holmes (Capt), M Booth, S Ratcliffe, A Sumner (S Thomson), M Mecklenberg (D Pickervance), M France, J Newsome.
