Formby U18 2-3 Fleetwood Town U18

FLEETWOOD, Lancs, 30 October, 2008

Formby U18 2-3 Fleetwood Town U18
FA Youth Cup 3rd Round Qualifying
Tuesday 28 October
2008
By Mike Sumner

Both teams knew the prize for winning this game was a tie with Oldham Athletic in the First Round Proper of the FA Youth Cup so were equally determined it was to be them.

Fleetwood started the better in the first half and their determination paid off when they took the lead from a Joey Newsome goal after a goalmouth scramble in the 12th minute.  Fleetwood worked hard to keep the ball and came under a bit of pressure from Formby who were a strong physical side as expected. We worked hard and kept composed and in the 25th minute Adam Sumner scored from a 25-yard shot from which the keeper stood no chance.  This goal came after hardworking Sumner had already hit the bar.  Town took their foot off the gas, which let them in and we then conceded just on the half time to go in 2-1 at the break.

In the second half Formby started the livelier and within 2-minutes they equalised and our heads went down.  We made a few changes and this seemed to lift the game again with excellent defending from Jordan Holmes and Matthew Wood who were outstanding.  Goals could have come from either side at this point as the game was quite open.  We then introduced Mark France who last week scored for the reserves.  Within 5-minutes of coming on he scored the winner to take us to the prized home tie.

The only sad part of the night was Captain and Man of the Match Adam Sumner (pictured) sustained a fracture to his foot and will be missing for the next few weeks.

Everyone involved played their part and did what was asked of them.  Job well done!!!

We are all excited and looking forward to playing a quality side like Oldham on Wednesday 5th November at Highbury kick off 7:00pm
