FLEETWOOD, Lancs, 09 October, 2008
Ashton Town 1 - 4 Fleetwood Town Youth
FA Youth Cup First Qualifying Round
Wednesday 8th October
It's not only the first team who have enjoyed recent FA Cup success - the U18's have progressed to the FA Youth Cup 2nd Qualifying Round. The team needed to improve from the last outing at Milnthorpe when the home team won 4-2.
Fleetwood made no mistake this time and started quickly and with purpose. This hard work paid off when Joey Newsome scored early in the game, but Ashton were gifted an equaliser before the break.
Fleetwood generated plenty of second half chances but needed to be patient. A period of good football allowed Sam Ratcliffe to regain the lead mid-way through the period. This gave the team a boost with Joey Newson scoring soon after.
The last 10 mins was all about Fleetwood keeping possession. This allowed Adam Sumner to make sure of the tie with a relatively easy goal. An impressive team performance was capped by a solid Andy Bartholemew display at the back and Liam Wynn's contribution. Joey Newsome took the man of the match award for his all round game and two great goals.
Fleetwood Town Under 18s will now meet the winners of the Daisy Hill v Formby encounter next Tuesday. The date of the FA Youth Cup 3rd Qualifying Round fixture has yet to be arranged.
