U14 Girls at the Golborne FC Tournament

The girls began their summer campaign of tournaments with a trip to Golborne near Warrington.

With an early rise the girls set off on what was to be a blistering hot day. Playing teams from Manchester, Liverpool, and Wigan Ladies, Fleetwood were looking forward to the challenge. Playing in a league of 6 teams the girls began brightly after working hard on 7 a side in training.

With three wins and two draws and not a goal conceded the girls finished top of the group and had to play second place Burscough who last year pipped the girls in the final of the Wigan Ladies tournament.

The final began, with Fleetwood applying all the pressure and Burscough hanging on for dear life. With excellent chances from Em McCarthy, Bex Lowe and Catherine Robinson the Burscough keeper kept them in it. A tactical switch of keepers just before the final whistle with McCarthy going in goal allowed her to be in place for the shootout.

Pulling a string of excellent saves she put Fleetwood in a great position with existing keeper Lottie Walsh having to stand up to the mark and secure victory. With a rocket of a shot she left the Burscough keeper no chance and the cup was coming to Fleetwood.

Manager Paul Holme said "the girls had worked extremely hard and with great strength in depth was able to call upon quality players at all times."

The team will become the Fleetwood Town Under 15 girls side this August and are currently seeking a sponsor.
