Fleetwood Town travelled the short distance to Thornton for a local derby and entered the game looking for their first double of the season. After a few tough encounters of late, today was an ideal opportunity for some of Fleetwood’s squad players to make an impression.
Anna Reynolds dominated the midfield for Fleetwood and had numerous attempts on goals. A goalmouth scramble saw Fleetwood nearly take the lead but unfortunately the ball just wouldn’t go in. Mid way through the first some good neat work on the right wing by Charlotte Brooks found Anna on the edge of the box but another effort flew just wide. Kelsey Hargreaves was again having a great game in the heart of the defence. Shortly before the half time whistle Fleetwood introduced Lucy Johnson, who immediately gave Fleetwood a cutting edge.
Fleetwood started the second half much the same pushing Thornton into their half of the pitch. Fleetwood finally made the breakthrough when an Anna Reynolds cross found Lucy Johnson unmarked in the box, as ever Lucy kept a level head and coolly slotted the ball past the keeper. Further goals followed when once again Lucy latched onto a loose ball in the box and finished neatly. Anna finally got a deserved goal when she fired in from outside the box to give the keeper no chance.
This was a good all round team performance today and Anna fully deserved her Man of the Match, an outstanding display.
