Fleetwood
Town struggled through to the second round of the FA Trophy after an uninspired
home victory over Worksop Town. A dull first half was enlivened only by an
amazing escape for the home side when a close range header bounced off the
underside of the cross bar and on to the goal-line before being scrambled away
to safety. Fleetwood's only meaningful chance before the break came when top
goal-scorer Alex Taylor's speculative 25 yard shot thundered off the woodwork
and into the path of Keiran Walmsley whose
follow up header was easily saved by the Worksop keeper.
The second half was heading for similar deadlock until the introduction of Fleetwood's Richard Allen as a replacement for Michael Brown in a double substitution by manager Tony Greenwood which also saw Lenny Reid replace Phil Robinson and the home side revert to a more orthodox 4-4-2 formation. The move almost paid instant dividends when firstly Allen carved out an opening for Taylor, whose diving header just missed the target, and then Reid weaved his way past a couple of tackles before striking a shot from outside the box which the goalkeeper comfortably dealt with. As the minutes ticked by, a midweek replay looked inevitable but, from out of the blue, and with a touch of class completely out of keeping with what had preceded it, Allen evaded two challenges before cutting inside and unleashing a shot from outside the penalty area which nestled into the far right hand corner of the net.
So, job done and a place in the second round beckons as Fleetwood put last week's controversial FA Cup exit at Barrow firmly behind them. Allen was man of the match on a day when few players impressed.
