Fleetwood Town 3-1 Curzon Ashton
GalaxyFootball.co.uk Lancashire League
Wednesday 21st October 2009

By  Steve Edwards

Fleetwood consolidated second place in the League table as they came out top in this very competitive Lancashire League fixture. Curzon thumped Town eleven one in the previous encounter when they were forced to field a very inexperienced side.

Town’s only scorer on that day Henry Ogden (pic) was the one survivor from the original line-up line and the game proved to be a footballing lesson by a much strengthened Fleetwood team.

Town started the better and Lee Dodgson was causing problems for the Curzon right back from the word go. The home side was denied a penalty when after the linesman flagged for a foul the referee chose to give the free kick on the line of the penalty area. Fleetwood took the lead after twenty five minutes when Tom Cahill, playing in the middle of the park, released Mark France. The youngster shrugged off a couple of defenders and finished smartly in the corner of the net. Five minutes later the score was doubled after a flowing move involving John Hills and Lee Dodgson .The resulting cross found Josh Few ten yards out and he slotted the ball through several players to score.

It was inevitable, after having been given the runaround for forty five minutes, Curzon would respond at the start of the second period, but despite having a lot of possession they rarely troubled Aaron Grundy in the Town goal. With just over twenty five minutes to go the referee decided to make a game of it and gave the visitors a helping hand in the form of a penalty. Grundy went down at the feet of a Curzon forward and collected the ball. The forward went over and much to everyone’s surprise the penalty was given. To rub salt into the custodians wounds, Grundy was also booked. The kick was planted firmly past him and Curzon was given a life line. However, try as they might, they were not given any more chances and it was Fleetwood who then had the better of the game. With five minutes to go Joe Cammozzi, not for the first time, rampaged down the right flank. The ball was cleared but only to Dodgson who cut in side and finished with some style from the edge of the box.

This was perhaps Towns best display of the season, playing some great football but also digging in when it mattered against a good side.
