Town school report
11 January 2010
Fleetwood Town’s School Liaison Officer David Mitchell looks ahead to the new school term and the work undertaken by the club in North Fylde schools.
The wintry conditions at the start of the New Year new school term have not dampened the enthusiasm of the Fleetwood Town community development team and plans are in place to continue the extensive work carried out before Christmas.
Melissa Brown, the club’s Community Youth Development Coach, has confirmed starting dates with schools and will be in the seven Fleetwood primary schools with activities covering Breakfast, Lunchtime and After School Clubs as well as during lesson time. Melissa, 19, also runs coaching sessions at Thornton Primary and Cardinal Allen High School and, just before the Christmas period, started work at Great Arley twice a week. This schools programme has been made possible by generous funding from the Sports Partnership.
A new development, funded by the Excellence in Cities programme, begins this term and involves the community team delivering a series of Healthy Living sessions to Fleetwood’s primary children. It is hoped to involve members of the Fleetwood Town first team in the programme, using them as role models in an aim to inspire disaffected children as well as rewarding pupils who achieve. Just before Christmas, the club was delighted to reward 150 young people who had secured 100% attendance records over term one. Each was given a free match ticket for the victory over Stafford Rangers.
Football festivals are being organized each half term, based at Fleetwood Sports College, and using some of their Junior Football Organisers as volunteers to help run the events. The first is on 21st January and features teams from Years 3 and 4 in Fleetwood’s schools. Town captain Jamie Milligan has kindly agreed to present certificates.
Half Term activities will be run by FA Level 2 coach Melissa between 15th and 19th February at the Memorial Park. Further details will appear in schools, at Saturday Club and on the club’s web site.
Fleetwood Town Football Club is committed to serving its community and is keen to hear from any other agencies or schools who may want to get involved in working with us. There is much yet to achieve and we hope that the completion of the proposed new stand on the Memorial Park side of the ground will provide an impressive facility for welcoming community groups to the Highbury Stadium.
